Rome

Continuing the trip story... from Florence we went to Rome, which is just full of amazing ruins, thousands of years old. I have been there before, but saw more new things this time. Here are some pictures:
This is outside the Vatican, which is a Country within a country (Rome) in Italy - it is where the Catholic Pope lives. It is very beautiful with lots of gold and statues and paintings, surrounded by these beautiful Roman columns.
This spiral staircase was the exit from the Vatican museum. Even exits are beautiful!
The Trevi fountain is one of my favourites. If you toss a coin into it backwards and make a wish, it is considered lucky.
This is the Colloseum - a place where Roman gladiators used to fight to the death, thousands of years ago.
This is a modern Roman gladiator, who you have to pay to have your picture taken with him.
Ancient ruins of a Roman temple at the Forum - the meeting place of all the important government people in Rome, like Julius Caesar. He is said to have been killed here.

Well, thats all for now. I need to get ready to go to Bosnia (a city called Mostar). We are just going for the day (from Croatia). More will come next time I have internet access, which might not be for a few days.

Coming next - Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii a buried ancient city, in Naples, south of Rome, then our big ferry crossing to Greece.

Keep working hard.

Hi Room 3

Hi Room 3 - I am pleased you found my writing on the blog! I still haven't found the email address list! You will be pleased to know we have now been through Montenegro - the country with the wolves. I didnt see any at all, but we did see some snakes! I will tell you more about that later. We are staying tonight in Croatia at a beautiful campsite overlooking the Adriatic sea. Hayden and Sarah have been swimming in the swimming pool here it is so warm.

I hope you are all training hard for the cross country. I might just about be able to beat you all - I am getting pretty fit... we walked all day today around Dubrovnik - an old medieval walled city. We climbed right up to the top of the walls and walked right round the whole city. There must have been thousands of steps!

In the morning I will do another update for you - the others want to use the computers now. Remember, my morning is your night, so watch out for the next update.

Oh, and to answer your questions - no, we didnt go in a boat or a gondola in Venice... they were quite expensive, and our legs were free, so we walked everywhere. Its flat, but you have to climb up and down over the steps over all the bridges, which need to be high enough for the boats to go under.

The cliffs off the sides of the scary roads, were straight down for hundreds of metres. There are mostly road barriers - sometimes stone and sometimes metal like we have on NZ motorways, but they didnt give me much comfort when we met a bus coming the other way! Sometimes we had just inches to spare as we edged our way past other big vehicles on the narrow winding roads. The views, however, were spectacular, and well worth the scare factor.

I am pleased you are all working so hard for Mrs Beveridge. Well done!

Moodeb

PS Oh and this will give you are real giggle, I decided I had to try something different in Croatia, so today for lunch I had FROGS LEGS! I had 12 pairs, and they were cooked in batter. They looked really funny, and didnt really tast like anything at all - they were quite tender, but I dont think I would order them again.

Dear MooDeb and family

Thanks very much for sending us the photos of your holiday. Hope you are having a good holiday. What is your favourite place so far?  We have been learning all about countries around the world so we found your pictures awesome.  Were the drops beside the roads near the mountain villages scary?  Have you been on a boat in Venice? IF so, did you like going on the boats rather than walking?

We are working really hard learning lots of things, and are getting ready for the cross country on your first day back at GVS.

Enjoy the rest of your trip and see you in 2 weeks

Florence, Italy

On the way to Florence, we visited the leaning tower of Pisa - it is in fact VERY leaning, so even though it is very big, we took a trick photograph of me and Mr M trying to straighten it up again!

We also visited the Cinqe Terra - 5 villages built into the hillsides (very very big hillsides). It was a pretty scary road to drive on because it was incredibly far down to the sea! The scenery was breathtaking though!

In Florence, we were lucky enough to visit the Uffizi art gallery - one of the best in the world, with paintings and sculptures by famous artists like Michael Angelo! There were lots of beautiful churches, and everything was highly decorated and sculpted. THis picture was just walking along the street!

Europe Trip - Hello from Mrs M

Well hello Room 3. Here I am sitting in the back blocks of Albania, and we have Internet access! I have no idea what I have done with the list of your email addresses I collected before I left, but I cant find it. This morning I had the bright idea that I could post on the blog and you would find it! Thank you to the children who have sent me emails. I have replied whenever we have internet access, which seems to be every few days.
I have sent some reports about our visit to castles by email, and hopefully those have been brought in to class. Here are some of the highlights of my trip so far:
After Germany, we went to Italy, where there is history which is over 2000 years old. Here are some pictures from the Italian part of our journey:
These photos are from Venice - it is accessed by water (though there is a causeway out to the islands it sits on). It is a very old and beautiful city.

In Venice, most of the roads are in fact water ways, and people travel round on boats, right up to the door of their houses.

This is me, standing in one of the narrow walking streets!

A lot of the boats look like this. They are called gondolas, and they have no motor. The gondalier stands on the end of the boat and pushes it along with a long pole. The gondolas are very highly decorated, and shiny, with cushions on all the seats.

This building in Venice was very hard to find - it is called "the snail".

In Venice, people dont have back yards, so they dry their washing by hanging it out high above the streets, and wind it in on pulleys when it is dry.

She is going to visit towns and countries such as Greece, Croatia and much, much more!
So she is going to update us about all of her exciting adventures and I will publish this onto our blog! Before she left she asked that we all pray for her safety because she has to stay in a small hut in Montenegro and that is the lair of wild wolves!
